So, what are the best metals for body piercing?

Low-carbon surgical stainless steel is an ideal choise for body piercing as, even though they contain alloys, these are trapped in the metal through a special process and so aren’t released into the skin. The grades 316L and 316LVM are the only types that are body-friendly and are the only types sold at Rue B. Surgical stainless steel is a really good choice for people with allergies, except in extream cases where you may suffer from hypersensitivity, In this case, titanium F136 should be used.

Titanium F136

Titanium is a great metal for initial piercings; it’s comfortable, lightweight and really body-friendly. Titanium is not only extreamely hypoallergenic it is also super strong and highly resistant to sea water corrosion. This metal can easily be shaped into a vast array of jewellery styles offering a versitility of looks and style

So being biocompatible it is safe to use with living tissue (that’s you!) as it is non toxic, non reactive and causes no immunological rejection. Implant Grade Titanium is used extensively by the British and American medical associations for implants due to its total resistance to attack by body fluids. Implant Grade Titanium is the professional piercer’s material of choice for your piercing jewellery.

Titanium was named after mythological Greek giants – the titans. Titanium is three times as strong as steel and twice as strong as aluminium . Titanium weighs much less than steel, making it both really strong and lightweight, perfect for piercings!

So if in any doubt go for Titanium!

Metals to Avoid

Sterling Silver

Sterling silver is an amazingly versatile material making it perfect for jewellery designs like earrings and pendants and we love it here at Rue B. However when it comes to other areas of the body such as Cartilage of Body piercings it should be avoided. This is because Sterling silver has an oxidation property that makes it harmful as a body piercing material, particularly when a piercing is new or healing. Sterling Silvers' oxidisation properties can easily cause severe reactions in unhealed or easily irritated areas. It is for this reason Rue B does not stock Sterling silver Body jewellery.

Fashion or Costume Jewellery is a big No No!

Despite being sold widly, Rue B strongly caustions against it's use in body jewellery.

Fashion or Costume jewellery is amazing and can be created into so many amazing designs and all ours is hypoalergenic and so safe to wear. That said it is Plated and this plating will eventually flake or wear off to expose the inner base metal, which can cause a big problem in Body piercings if the metal isn’t inert. Low-grade metals such as copper, nickel, tin, zinc, and brass aren’t proper choices for body piercings. They can cause allergic reactions and infections, or even cause the body to completely reject the piercing.

For your skins health It’s always best to keep to safe metals to ensure you look after your body. So for peace of mind  choose Rue B for  your body piercing jewellery to ensure you're buying the highest quality jewellery!
